New Year’s Resolve

I joke every year that my only resolution is to make no resolutions, and that I have a perfect success rate. Rather than actually trying to make a resolution this year, I plan to keep at the running.

Albeit somewhat hazy recollection, I remember ringing in the New Year, watching the ball drop, and watching most of the people around me kiss each other. I stood, hugged a couple of my friends, and proceeded to drink more champagne. Sipping my second pint glassful, and hoping that 2014 would end differently than 2013 did.

I had nothing to do on New Year’s Day. When I woke up, I did have a pressing need to handle a mild hangover. Some water, some relaxation, a little food, and some more water delayed my run to about 4 p.m. Naturally, this means that between my puttering and my getting ready, I didn’t actually leave the house until about 4:30-45 area.

Boston itself has been blanketed in somewhere between 5 and 6 inches of snow, at my rough estimate, with more expected for tomorrow. I knew I wanted to get my first run of the new year in before I lost my opportunity. With the sunlight shining, and the calm-before-the-storm warmth in the air, I was optimistic I wasn’t going to end this run on my ass again.

The run itself was relatively uneventful. I ran more or less the same route as Monday, but kept running past where I stopped earlier in the week. Looking now at my run tracking app, it doesn’t have an accurate starting point for my run–I think it wasn’t working for possibly a full quarter-mile. I believe I ran for about 2.7 miles. The freezing air tightened my throat at the beginning of the run, and by the end I had hiked up my sleeves.

What surprised me was that, by the time I returned home, the hangover was gone. It had been stronger when I awoke at 6 a.m. for a trip to the can, and a glass of water, some aspirin and a nap, made it just a mild one when I got out of bed at 11 a.m. By the time I returned home at about 5:30 p.m., I was feeling like a million bucks.

So, running can apparently solve all of the problems that come with alcohol: the caloric content as well as the hangovers. Is there nothing running can’t do?

  1. Sometimes my GPS apps (Runkeeper, etc.) and even my Garmin GPS watch takes some time to “locate satellites”. I get inaccurate start positions because of this. I’d recommend starting your app, standing still for a bit until you see the dot, then start running. It may help!
